Donating Hair for Wigs
At HopeCircle we try to make our patients feel comfortable and supported as they face an uncertain journey they never wanted to take. One of the ways we do that is to help patients who will lose their hair find head coverings that provide not only covering for the head but comfort, warmth, a touch of color and a sense of normalcy during what feels like an “un-normal” time.
Patients and loved ones often inquire about how they can participate in providing wigs and other items for patients experiencing hair loss. Purchasing hats, caps, scarves and other items is one way. Knitting, crocheting or sewing items is another way, as is making a monetary donation. Another unique avenue to “pass it forward” is to donate your hair to a group that provides wigs and hairpieces to children and adults. While donating hair will not help anyone immediately, it does provide for needs in the future.
There are several organizations that accept hair donations to be used in wigs and hairpieces for children and adults. Most groups require uncolored and un-permed hair in a clean, dry ponytail of at least 8-12”. The requirements vary with each organization, so it is important to check with the organization you select.
Listed below are three organizations that accept donations of hair. If you are interested in becoming a hair donor, you may contact one of them for specific instructions.
